8 May 1945: After nearly six years of war, the guns across Europe fell silent. Nazi Germany had surrendered, and the Second World War in Europe was over. Today, on the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, we remember that moment with deep pride, gratitude, and reflection.
The streets of Britain were filled with joy in 1945. Church bells rang, flags waved, and millions rejoiced in a hard-won peace. But amid the celebrations stood a figure who embodied the nation’s courage and resilience—Winston Churchill.
At 3pm, Churchill delivered a national radio address, confirming victory but urging restraint:“We may allow ourselves a brief period of rejoicing; but let us not forget for a moment the toil and efforts that lie ahead.”
Later, he stood on a Whitehall balcony before cheering crowds. When he declared, “This is your victory,” the people shouted back, “No – it’s yours!” Though Churchill would lose the General Election just weeks later, his role as the architect of Britain’s wartime leadership remains unmatched.

VE Day is not just a chapter in history. It is a testament to what can be achieved when a nation unites in the face of darkness. At the Regiment Support Service, we honour that spirit not only in remembrance—but in action. By supporting today’s veterans, we ensure the legacy of yesterday’s heroes lives on.
We will remember them. Always.
